[MMA] 1st Workshop On Basic Clinical Skill

Wednesday - Mansoura Medical Academy [MMA], under the supervision of Academic Unit of PCM, organized their 1st Workshop on Basic Clinical Skill, on 20th April at Mansoura University, with the theme of Safe Needle Injection. This workshop was attended by a group of 40 Manchester and Conventional members from MMA.

Initially participants were given a short briefing on basic anatomy and the procedure itself, and were given the opportunity to perform the procedures individually.

MMA crews jot down the very basic principles and place it on the lab’s table after the briefing as a reminder for the students in order to prevent errors.

The workshop mainly focused on : IM, SC, IV injection, IV cannula and venous blood sampling.

Alhamdulillah, this Safe Needle Injection programme was great, beneficial and fun! They taught us how to hold the needle confidently and inserting the cannula. My hand was shaking all the time. Though we were shy at first, the MMA crews were being very supportive throughout the whole learning process. Keep up the good work and I will always support MMA, insyaAllah” said Aynn Nassier one of the participants.

MMA members concentrate hard to make sure they didn’t miss any important points.

Another participant, Mujahid Sabri noted, “I am very happy because this is the first time I have the chance to join such programme. To my surprise, it is free too! Congratulations to MMA! My hope is that we can apply the skills on real patients, someday,” he said.

One of the programme volunteers said, “We want to share all the knowledge we’ve learned from this workshop with other students in the community who can greatly gain benefits from it.”

MMA crew, Siti Hajar Shahruddin who is in charge of this programme, making sure that everybody did not miss anything.

Lastly, we hoped that the knowledge obtained from this would be advantageous for the students in the future. The learning and teaching of clinical skills must be linked to theory, as clinical skills are theoretically underpinned, and students need to be aware of this. The skill must be taught according to the correct method and procedure, which reflects how it is done clinically and assessed. It is interesting to note that the correct procedure must be explained in more than one way (not demonstrated or practiced or derived from observing a range of methods/ procedures). Students learn clinical skills by having opportunities to do the skill, and repetition is key for learning.

2 groups that have been divided that day were satisfied with the first program held by MMA. They are looking forward for the next event.
